Clawson Super 8

Hey, I'm in my hometown of Clawson Michigan, and will soon be heading to the Hide Out!

Nothing makes me happier then spending time with my friends and family while staying at the Super 8, the only hotel in Clawson! In honor of this trip, I thought I'd post these pictures from the Super 8 taken a year or two ago.

When I got to the hotel, I turned on the TV and put the remote on the end table.

...but as I thought about it more something felt strange. Something felt wrong, and in that moment I turned over the hotel remote to find THIS...

Gross...

Glad to be home!

Comics from Tracy

In our film "Tracy" we had a scene featuring one of the characters secret comic book collection. We created over 30 original comic book covers, most of which go completely unnoticed in the 3 to 4 minute scene. For the next few months I'll post one a week so that they can finally get their due.

I did this one in honor of the "Comic Character Holding a Dead Comic Character" genre that has been so popular over the decades. This one was meant to represent the more modern version of this. Eat your heart out Todd McFarlane!

Here is my entry in this weeks New Yorker Caption Contest. Each week they provide the image and you provide the caption.

"Number seven across is adultery."

Here's the left overs...

How about, "Thou shall cut thy toe nails before bed?"

Hypocrite.

Can’t you write that in the morning? You’re getting crumbs in the bed!

Dan's Found Caricature

Every now and then one finds a picture, person, plant or mineral that looks just like oneself. My friends call these Found Caricatures, and for the next few weeks I'll be posting Found Caricatures of myself each Friday. Please let me know when you find them successful, or when you think they’re crap.

My friend Jason found this one reading a children's book to his son called This is San Francisco. It's perfect because, like the cartoon man in the picture, I live in San Francisco, I take the cable car to and from work every day, but it's slightly less then perfect because unlike the cartoon man, I don't have hair on my head, but we do have the same beard and shirt.

"I think I may be getting to old for a child psychiatrist."

Here's the left overs...

It's much easier to get in touch with my childhood this way.

I like this much better than the old, black leather rocket you use to have.

I'm not sure if this makes me feel more crazy or less crazy.

Here's this week's nominees...

I did this one, and I'm not really sure what it's based on, but it just seemed like some kind of dumb Disney pirate cartoon that I would hate. I don't like pirates. Sorry, I just didn't grow up with "cool" pirates. To me pirates have always been kind of boring. The only pirates from my childhood were in a movie from the 80's called "Ice Pirates" and I'm pretty sure that sucked.

This is why my generation hates pirates...

Dog Toy Painting Series

I've started a series of still lives featuring my tiny six pound dog Carol's toys. Eh, this weeks didn't turn out so great. Better luck next week.

Dan's Found Caricature

When I was a kid I dreamed of one day owning the famous red and black leather Michael Jackson Thriller jacket.

This week, after 20 years of losing interest, I found a $60 pleather recreation of the jacket at Urban Outfitters. I put it on as a joke and looked like this...

but in what was left of my 8 year old mind I looked like this...

...but in the real Fantasy Island dream come true, slash, ironic nightmare, I actually looked more like this guy...

...and so begins a special month long Halloween edition of Dan's Found Caricatures.

Check in each Friday this month for more...

Enjoy!

This one was done by Tracy himself, Brian Fee. Brian lovingly crafted this to evoke the feeling of the old horror comics of the 60's. It's also based on a novelty Halloween severed head Brian bought a few years back called "Worm Food". He bought the head with the hopes of spending his weekends repainting it to look more realistic, but like most refurbishing projects, worm food still sits half finished, and forgotten, like so many bondo covered cars, and untended gardens.

Help me out? I’m on unpaid vacation.

I just need twenty-three cents and I’ll be rich again.

You’re going to have to take your change back I’m on vacation.

Dog Toy Painting Series

I've started a series of still lives featuring my tiny six pound dog Carol's toys. This is the last in a three part series within the series, which features a belonging of Carol's, in this case a plate of her gross wet food, and a toy of Carol's, Mr. Bear, who she doesn't play with all that much. We're running out of toys, gonna have to start double dipping next week.

By the way Carol is getting over a doggie cold at the moment. Poor gal.

Morning Thoughts

You know those "brilliant" thoughts you have in the morning right before you wake up that turn out to be stupid by lunch time, those are morning thoughts, and I had this one today...

I thought it would be funny this morning to do an open mic stand up comedy act where you subtly suggest that a major news event has accrued in the last hour that no one knows about yet; all the while making jokes about it while keeping the whole made thing very vague. Here’s an example.

“Hey everybody! So wow, what a difference and hour can make, huh? Can you believe what’s going on? I mean after all those years of campaigning on change, this isn’t exactly the change we had in mind, am I right? I mean, who’s the presidents adviser, Heidi and Spencer? But seriously, they’re shooting all of this for a Fox reality show called, “ I’m an American President Get Me Out of Here!”

At this point I would hope that people would start whispering, “What the hell is he talking about?”. I'd just continue with, “To think an hour ago, Joe Biden was all like, ‘Maybe I’ll take tomorrow off for a long weekend’, and now he’s all like, ‘Shit, my calendar just got jacked!”

At this point I'd hope people might start calling out, “What happen?” or “What the hell are you talking about?!” I'd just ignore them saying,“Please, I worked really hard to get these jokes together this fast, I know they’re not great but what do you expect this JUST happened!” If they got more irate, or begged to know more, I’d say, “You’re right, this was a bad idea. It’s too soon to be joking about this, I’ll just go back to my regular act, and then I'd say, "So, what’s the deal with Spaghetti and meat balls?”

I did this one. It's based on the crappy 70's disco era comic characters that used their hip, non violent powers to bore you to death.

Dog Toy Painting Series

Sorry, there's no dog painting this weekend, I'm on vacation with some very good friends.

Eight year ago I met these guys on an amazing trip down Route 66, four years after that we went to Santa Fe to watch Zozobra burn and now, four years later we'll be spending two nights in Lake Tahoe getting caught up.

More dog toy painting next week!

*Update - The trip was great! My friend Steve took this picture of me; I'm the beautiful stretch of road to the right of the terrified man on the hilltop.

* Update: "Tracy" won Best Mockumentary at the Ferndale Film Festival! Thanks to everyone that put on the festival and to everyone that went to see the film.

Dog Toy Painting Series

I've started a series of still lives featuring my tiny six pound dog Carol's toys. This painting has a similar composition to the one I did last week. I like pairing up a toy with another of Carol's worldly possessions. I might do one more like this next so that I have a matching set of three.

Sunday Morning Hang Over

Every Sunday morning Michele and I eat breakfast at a different local restaurant, but no matter where we go, we see this guy and his friends at the table next to ours.

You know this guy, he's the "Sunday Morning Hung Over Guy", he has a greasy faux hawk and fat swollen Jimmy Kimmel eyes. He wears his college sweat shirt and eats a giant plate of huevos rancheros. He drinks a large orange juice or a large mimosa, if he's smart.

But sadder than the "Sunday Morning Hung Over Guy" at the table next to ours, is the "Sunday Morning Hung Over Girl" at the table next to them. She shouts at her friends with that thick Minnesota weather lady accent that so many girls under the age of 35 seem to have. Her thong is worn provocatively pulled up over her unwashed sweat pants, and her make up is gone, left behind on the pillows of the "Sunday Morning Hung Over Guy".

Oh,to be young again!

The Call of the Ocean

In honor of our feature film Tracy being screened today in Michigan, I'm debuting my first project after Tracy right now! It's entitled "Call of the Ocean", It's one minute long, and I think it really shows how I've matured as a filmmaker since Tracy.

Be sure to vote after the video if you fine the film funny or if you'd like it to die.

Enjoy!

Dog Toy Painting Series

I've started a series of still lives featuring my tiny six pound dog Carol's toys. This is Mr. Piggy next to one of Carol's water bowls. I've gone back to the one color paintings and it feels good. I want to spend a longer time painting with only one color before I start introducing too many other colors. I rushed through the fundamentals in college and now is a good time to start over and take as much time as I need.

This is the second Mr. Piggy Carol's own, the first one she had as a puppy but it use to scare her when she'd bite it and it would squeak. Carol was very delicate then, but now she loves to murder Mr. Piggy.
