"Tracy" Deleted Scene!

Hey all,

Thought I'd post one of the few deleted scenes from our web-series TRACY this week.

This clip was originally made for the moment in this week's episode (click here to see) where the filmmaker talks about his claymation series called "The Fwebick." I shot this version first and then my wife and producer Michele Scanlon suggested that we do something with a little more action, and we came up with the version that's in the film now. But I still think there is a simple charm to this incredibly boring Fwebicks clip.

By the way I really did make claymation movies about the Fwebicks in the past, but I was 9 years old, instead of 27.

Enjoy, and watch out for Episode 11 of "Tracy" this Thursday night entitled "Renaissance Men".

The Indescribable Nth

My first professional animation job was a short film by Steve (Oscar) Moore, produced by "Character Builders" in Columbus Ohio called "The indescribable Nth".

It's a deceptively simple, beautiful little film about love, and I learned so much from this project. I was a struggling clean up artist finishing my final year in art school in Columbus Ohio when I learned of this project. The film had been on hold for a few years when Steve allowed me to practice my animation skills on a few shots. I had a great time practicing on this film on weekends, and I took as many shots as they'd give me. Because of the work I did on this short "Character Builders" took me off clean up and moved me to animation, and eventually story. I'm pretty certain I would have been fired after a few weeks as a clean up artist if this opportunity hadn't come up.

I left Character Builders and Columbus to try to find work in California, and if Steve hadn't attended a party for Joe Grant, and talked to Joe Ranft I wouldn't have the job I have today, which coincidently I got 9 years ago on Sept 10th.

So please, take a few minutes to check out this beautiful little film...and check out Steve's great online animation magazine called "Flip".

MacLon Industries

I spent last weekend in Vegas for my cousin Brian's bachelor party. We dressed up like mid-western salesmen representing a fictional company called MacLon Industries, a combination of both cousins last names MacLean and Scanlon.

I grew a mustache and looked 5 years older, 15 pounds heavier and 20 times more religious.

Here I am on the first night party at Margarettaville. Don't want to go too crazy, we've got a big sales presentation in the morning, not to mention the big convention!

The next day my brother and fellow sales rep for Maclon Inc. and I ate a "Burger King" to get our energy up and then hit the strip.

After the presentation we rewarded the crew with cocktails and sun bathing by the pool.

Here I am networking with some real "out of the box" thinking young salesmen. "I'm sold!"

Met up with the rest of the Maclon Inc. crew later that afternoon. Hide your wallets, this sales crew is on the prowl, and they won't take wholesale for an answer!

Oh snap! This party just got turn up a notch!

Oops, we missed the convection by 6 hours, but we made some real relevant connections. Time to go home and watch "Ocean's 11" on TNT's "Movies for Guys", eat a "Wendy's" and fall asleep in the bathtub!

Latest Covered...

Here's the latest edition to one of my favorite websites, "Covered". "Covered" was created by comic artist Robert Goodin, it's a website where artists do "covers" of their favorite comic book covers (Like a band "covering" a song). To see and comment on my third, and certainly not final entree... click here...I'm all about the classic X-men.

F.U. Money

What would you do if you had so much money that you could say a big old "F U" to the world? This is what I would do...

I admit I don't know much about cars, but if I had endless financial means I would get one of the most extravagant cars money can buy just to make my static clear to the world. As I tried to think of the one car that represents incredible extravagance over all others, only one automobile came to mind. A car so luxurious that the likes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Ted Turner can only rent one, a car so unique one needs specialized training just to drive it. That's right, I'm taking about...

a limousine.

When I get my fortune I will not only purchase my own Limousine, but I plan on under going the elite "chauffeurs" training needed to drive this automobile. That way I will be able to pull up next to the "new money millionaires" in their Porches, Rolls Royces, and Lamborghinis and blow their minds as I tip my official chauffeurs cap and wrap my white gloves around the wheel and peel out into traffic. But I won't just be driving this thing to the store, hell no, I plan on doing some high performance shit; street racing, close track, Gumball 3000, I plan on opening up this M F'er! I will push it to the limit, even if it means blowing out a few worn tires and replacing a few busted champagne flutes.

I know what you're thinking, "Yeah, a Limousine is a phenomenal machine, but how practical is it? The Limousine not only has the elegance and sportiness of a Dodge Viper, it also has the practicality of a Ford Super Duty 450. Most sports vehicles don't even have a back seat, but the Limousine has the cargo room to haul furniture, industrial lumber, and an Apocalypse worth of groceries.

So as we head into prom season, the next time you pull up next to a beautiful Lincoln stretch, think twice before you challenge it to a drag off the line, it might just be me behind that tinted glass, and I will not hesitate to smoke your ass.

Covered

I did another comic cover for the website "Covered". It's a great site created by Robert Goodin, where artists do covers of old comic book covers.

A Dan Scanlon is on Twitter!

Hey everybody, Dan Scanlon is on twitter...

...not this Dan Scanlon, but a Dan Scanlon, and that's good enough for me!

I don't know if, or when, I'll ever get around to tweeting myself, so in the mean time, it's easier for me if you just go to this Dan Scanlon's twitter and pretend that everything he writes is being written by me.

Against my better judgment, I take full responsibility for everything he tweets and will go ahead and assume that all of his opinions will be totally inline with mine! Enjoy!

Coast to Coaster

I have a dream of one day traveling the country from the East coast to the West coast, drinking at bars and writing stories about the strange people I meet along the way while drawing silly pictures on the back of bar coasters. I plan on publishing my findings in a coffee table book called "Coast to Coaster". This drawing of a fat kitty was inspired by the wet ring made from my Sazerac at Koko, one of my favorite bars in San Francisco.

Mannequin Photo Shoot 2

Next time you're at the mall try this out, take a photo of a headless mannequin, then take a photo of your head under the same light and let photoshop fun take it from there. This week's mannequin photo shoot special guest is my Brother Bill Scanlon. We shot this one at the Oakland Mall in Michigan...

Here's one we shot of me a few years ago at Fishermen's Wharf in SF...

More to come...

Comic Cover

A few months ago I found out about a website called "Covered" where artist cover famous comic book covers in their own styles, needless to say, the 12 year old nerd inside me got very excited! Here are some examples...

Check out Aaron's work here.

Josh's work here.

And lastly, check out my good friend Jeff Heermann's work here...

The blog is run by artist Robert Goodin. I really wanted to cover a comic myself. After thinking about it for a week or so I decided to take on one of the most iconic comic covers of all time; the 1963 Jack Kirby classic, X-men number one. Here is my "cover" of that comic...

I got a lot of really nice comments that you can read here...
