A Fun Night at a Historic San Francisco Bar

Michele and I wrapped up 2009 by taking a trip to a local bar with an impressive history. The bar is called "Tosca Cafe" in North Beach and I highly recommend you check it out. We've been to Tosca before, but the other night really reminded me just how special this place is, as you can tell from the pictures of Michele and I taken at Tosca's Cafe below ...

The bar has been around for over 80 years, and is known for it's signature Irish coffee drink. We started the night with two steaming hot glasses, and all I have to say about that is Yum! Here's a picture of me thinking about having another of those chocolaty sensations. Can you tell I'm conflicted?

Another great thing about Tosca is it's a favorite watering hole to celebrities like Johnny Depp, not to mention local Bay Area celebrities like Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Penn and probably Robin Williams! Tosca's is also known for encouraging celebrities to feel comfortable during their visit. They want the celebs to know that they won't be gawked at like they might at other bars. I got a taste of this treatment first hand when I noticed several people at the bar staring at me as I took this picture of myself...

They must have recognized me from my blog. But did they come over and bother me? No! They kept their distance, because Tosca has created a cool, relaxed atmosphere for all people to feel comfortable and anonymous, which is why the Beat Poets of the 60's called Tosca's Cafe home.

Uh oh, looks like Michele has gotten caught up in the spirit of the Beat generation herself...

Tosca's Cafe is classic 1930's, right down to the vintage jukebox with original 45 records! That's right, records! Remember those? ( Jukebox just out of view to the right of me in pic. below.)

So if you find yourself in San Francisco and you're looking for a comfortable place to rest your bones, have a stiff drink, or just plain enjoy a touch of San Francisco's rich history, then my friend, look no further than right here...
