Dog Toy Painting Series

I've started a series of still lives featuring my tiny six pound dog Carol's toys. This is another take of the Pink toy. I did one along time ago that I was never too happy with.

* Also check out this months flip animation magazine for an interview I did about doing these paintings. Click here to read the interview.

Dan's Found Caricature

Every now and then one finds a picture, person, plant or mineral that looks just like oneself. My friends call these Found Caricatures, and for the next few weeks I'll be posting Found Caricatures of myself each Friday. Please let me know when you find them successful, or when you think they’re crap.

I was shocked to see how much this "goofy" plumber model looked like me. Kind of sucks he's supposed to be a fat slob and not a Disney prince or American Gladiator. Oh well, to make this into an actual costume of me you'll need to add a plaid shirt, brown pants, and really small hands and feet.

Happy Halloween!

Comics from Tracy

In our film "Tracy" we had a scene featuring one of the characters secret comic book collection. We created over 30 original comic book covers, most of which go completely unnoticed in the 3 to 4 minute scene. For the next few months I'll post one a week so that they can finally get their due.

This one was done by Josh Cooley in the beloved Saturday morning Anime style. Unlike Josh, this stuff was very popular in the 90's.

This Week's New Yorker Caption Contest

Here is my entry in this weeks New Yorker Caption Contest. Each week they provide the image and you provide the caption.

"I don’t feel you’re giving your whole self to this job."

Here's the left overs...

I’m afraid we’re going to have to find a new head of sales.

Please, sit down.

Sorry, workmans comp doesn’t cover this.

It’s still not appropriate to say “ I want your body” to a fellow employee.

You said you had plenty of experience pouring cement counter tops.

Here's this weeks nominees...

I saw a picture of this guy in the paper a few years ago and thought he kind of looked like me with a weird crappy smile on my face. I did some research and found that he was a filmmaker named Troy Duffy, and that the photo was advertising a documentary about his story, a film called "Overnight", which I HIGHLY recommend. It's a great cautionary tale for those planning on getting exactly what they want, and ruining that opportunity by being a giant ragging asshole.

Clawson Super 8

Hey, I'm in my hometown of Clawson Michigan, and will soon be heading to the Hide Out!

Nothing makes me happier then spending time with my friends and family while staying at the Super 8, the only hotel in Clawson! In honor of this trip, I thought I'd post these pictures from the Super 8 taken a year or two ago.

When I got to the hotel, I turned on the TV and put the remote on the end table.

...but as I thought about it more something felt strange. Something felt wrong, and in that moment I turned over the hotel remote to find THIS...

Gross...

Glad to be home!

I did this one in honor of the "Comic Character Holding a Dead Comic Character" genre that has been so popular over the decades. This one was meant to represent the more modern version of this. Eat your heart out Todd McFarlane!

Can’t you write that in the morning? You’re getting crumbs in the bed!

My friend Jason found this one reading a children's book to his son called This is San Francisco. It's perfect because, like the cartoon man in the picture, I live in San Francisco, I take the cable car to and from work every day, but it's slightly less then perfect because unlike the cartoon man, I don't have hair on my head, but we do have the same beard and shirt.

"I think I may be getting to old for a child psychiatrist."

Here's the left overs...

It's much easier to get in touch with my childhood this way.

I like this much better than the old, black leather rocket you use to have.

I'm not sure if this makes me feel more crazy or less crazy.

Here's this week's nominees...

I met this nice guy at a bar a year or so ago and thought he kind of looked like me with a beard, and a slightly larger head.

I did this one, and I'm not really sure what it's based on, but it just seemed like some kind of dumb Disney pirate cartoon that I would hate. I don't like pirates. Sorry, I just didn't grow up with "cool" pirates. To me pirates have always been kind of boring. The only pirates from my childhood were in a movie from the 80's called "Ice Pirates" and I'm pretty sure that sucked.

This is why my generation hates pirates...

Here's the leftovers...

I already claimed this place in the name of Venice Beach.

I always thought moon walks were faked.

I’ll trade you some gravity for some water.

I just need twenty-three cents to get back to earth.

Dog Toy Painting Series

I've started a series of still lives featuring my tiny six pound dog Carol's toys. Eh, this weeks didn't turn out so great. Better luck next week.

Dan's Found Caricature

When I was a kid I dreamed of one day owning the famous red and black leather Michael Jackson Thriller jacket.

This week, after 20 years of losing interest, I found a $60 pleather recreation of the jacket at Urban Outfitters. I put it on as a joke and looked like this...

but in what was left of my 8 year old mind I looked like this...

...but in the real Fantasy Island dream come true, slash, ironic nightmare, I actually looked more like this guy...

...and so begins a special month long Halloween edition of Dan's Found Caricatures.

Check in each Friday this month for more...

Enjoy!
